Giving Another Car a Jump Start

Knowing how to jump start a car is a great skill to have, but it is just as important to have your car regularly serviced to avoid the battery dying unexpectedly. Follow these simple steps the next time you need to help out with a jump start.

Turn off both cars’ engines. Connect the red jumper cable to the positive ends of both battery terminals. The black jumper cables hook up to both negative ends. Start the working car’s engine. The other car should be able to start at this point. Upon disconnecting the cables, be sure to keep the car running for about 20 minutes before shutting off its engine at all. This will ensure that it is sufficiently charged to start again after turning off the engine.
